![]() ![]() WWF focuses on improving intelligence gathering networks to better protect white rhinoceroses from poachers and traffickers as part of its effort to monitor and protect them. Because of its relatively low level of aggression and nomadic lifestyle, the white rhinoceros is particularly vulnerable to poaching. Northern and southern white rhinoceros subspecies are genetically distinct and can be found in two distinct parts of Africa. White rhinoceroses are the second largest land mammal, and their name is derived from the Afrikan word weit, which means wide and refers to their mouth. They are native to Africa and can be found in the countries of Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia. The white rhinoceros is the largest of the two, and can weigh up to two thousand pounds. There are only two species of rhinoceros that are not extinct, and the white rhinoceros is one of them. As the Poaching progressed, it is estimated that only ten of the captives survived by 2000. Despite the existence of conservation efforts, 25% of mammals on the planet face extinction. In addition, the white rhinoceros subspecies found in central Africa is feared to have died out. ![]() The Western black rhinoceros (referred to as a rhinoceros in Western cultures) has been declared extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, there is still hope for the subspecies, as two of the remaining rhinos are living in captive breeding programs in the hopes of one day reintroducing the species back into the wild. The last known wild West African black rhino was seen in 2006, and the species has not been observed in the wild since then. ![]() As of 2018, there are only four known West African black rhinos remaining in the world, making the subspecies functionally extinct. ![]()
